The California State Athletic Commission has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Rek, a technology startup that calls itself the humanoid robot fighting league. The Verge AI reported that the regulatory action followed a mixed match held last month between a human contestant and a robot. [1]

The contest took place on September 18, 2026, and pitted human participant Frankie LaPenna against a humanoid robot owned by Rek. According to The New York Times, as cited by The Verge AI, a human operator piloted the robot during the event using a remote virtual-reality system. [1]

California became the 31st state of the United States on September 9, 1850. The state maintains a total gross domestic product of 4.1 trillion dollars as of 2025, driven significantly by its technology sector in Silicon Valley. [3]

State regulators sent the formal demand letter directly to the startup to halt further unapproved fights. Neither Rek nor state officials have publicly detailed any subsequent legal steps. [1]
