Google Research Moves Federated Learning for Gboard into Secure Enclaves
Google Research has updated its federated learning system to move gradient computation into hardware-attested server environments.

Google Research has unveiled an updated federated learning framework that executes gradient computation inside trusted execution environments. MarkTechPost reported that the architecture uses server-side attested enclaves to process updates for the Gboard keyboard application while supporting externally verifiable differential privacy. [1]
The new system publishes access policies to the Rekor transparency log maintained by Sigstore. According to MarkTechPost, the underlying software binaries are built reproducibly, allowing external third parties to inspect and verify central differential privacy guarantees. [1]
Reporting on the deployment, remio said the infrastructure shifts trust mechanisms directly into secure server hardware. FourWeekMBA reported that using trusted execution environments reduced training cycles for Gboard to three weeks. [2][3]
Google was founded as an American technology corporation that later formed dedicated artificial intelligence research initiatives, including Google Brain in 2011. The team merged into Google DeepMind in April 2023. [4][5]
In short
- Google Research moved Gboard federated learning gradient computations into server-side trusted execution environments.
- Access policies are logged to Sigstore Rekor to enable external differential privacy checks.
- The use of trusted execution environments reduced Gboard model training time to three weeks.
