French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI has released Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, as a public preview, according to MarkTechPost and SiliconANGLE AI. MarkTechPost reported that the multimodal mixture of experts model features 1.05 trillion total parameters, while SiliconANGLE AI and VentureBeat described it as a 1 trillion parameter model. SiliconANGLE AI added that access was opened through the company cloud platform. [1][2][6]

MarkTechPost reported that the model activates 49 billion parameters per token and includes a 1.6 billion parameter vision encoder with native image input and a 1 million token context window. SiliconANGLE AI also noted that the architecture uses 49 billion parameters at a time to increase hardware efficiency. MarkTechPost added that the model was trained from scratch using 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell graphics processing units located in European datacenters owned by Mistral AI. [1][2]

The release is aimed at competing with artificial intelligence offerings from the United States and China, according to Wired AI and NewsCord. ZDNet AI reported that the open model is positioned as a solution for business cyber defense requirements, particularly against agent security breaches. Large language models process natural language tasks and serve as the foundation for modern conversational software tools. [3][4][7][11]

Mistral AI plans to release the weights for the model later in the month, according to SiliconANGLE AI and VentureBeat. [2][6]
