Finnish authorities have ordered Google to halt major site work on two planned data centers in the country, Data Center Knowledge and Tom's Hardware reported. The regulatory intervention occurred after officials discovered that substantial land clearing and site preparation took place before environmental impact assessments were completed. [1][2]

The affected facilities are part of a 13 billion euro data center expansion project in Finland, according to Data Center Knowledge and TechTarget. Tom's Hardware reported that project work led to the clearing of over 740 acres of forest. ForkLog reported that the cleared land area totaled 500 hectares. [1][2][5][8]

Regulators stated that proper environmental assessments could not be performed after the physical landscape had already been altered, Tom's Hardware reported. Data Center Knowledge noted that Google had secured access to significant electrical grid capacity through Finnish grid operator Fingrid, but environmental permit violations stopped project construction. [1][2]

Google operates large scale data center facilities globally, integrating computer nodes, internal networking, and environmental controls to run its services. As FTMQ SI reported earlier, rapid power demand fluctuations from growing artificial intelligence infrastructure have also required hyperscalers to coordinate closely with electrical grid operators to protect grid stability.
