InformationWeek reported that Microsoft is offering approximately 60,000 employees the option to leave the company through a voluntary buyout program announced on Oct. 26, 2026. The buyout program covers about 27 percent of Microsoft's global workforce. Eligible employees are expected to make their final decisions by early December. [1]

The voluntary buyout program introduces significant operational risks for enterprise IT infrastructure, according to InformationWeek. CIOs and technology leaders face challenges because critical IT systems can become vulnerable if departing staff leave with specialized skills and undocumented institutional knowledge. Executive planning must occur before management knows which specific employees will choose to exit. [1]

As FTMQ SI reported earlier, the voluntary buyout offer applies to Microsoft employees based in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India. The initiative comes as artificial intelligence fundamentally alters staffing needs across the technology sector. The recent offer is substantially larger than a previous retirement program at Microsoft that was limited to approximately 9,000 workers. [2]

InformationWeek noted that the buyouts were announced ahead of the company's first quarter fiscal 2027 earnings report. Microsoft has stated that total participation rates in the program will vary by business unit depending on specific operational requirements. [1]
