The city of Munich is returning to open-source software by transitioning its infrastructure programs away from proprietary tools, ZDNet AI and ZDNET reported. Speaking at the Open Source Summit Europe in Prague, Dr. Laura Dornheim, the chief digital officer of Munich, announced that the city is making the switch across its backend systems. [1][2]
The municipal infrastructure plan includes replacing VMware with Proxmox, according to ZDNet AI. The city is also moving away from proprietary collaboration tools, transitioning from Jira and Confluence to OpenProject and XWiki. [1]
The shift will not include a return to the Linux desktop for municipal workers at this time, ZDNet AI reported. Dr. Dornheim stated in her keynote address that political reasons, rather than technical issues, led Munich to abandon its original LiMux Linux desktop deployment for Windows over ten years ago. [1]
Linux is an open-source operating system kernel originally authored by Linus Torvalds, 6. As FTMQ SI reported earlier, Torvalds spoke at the same Open Source Summit Europe regarding artificial intelligence usage in open-source development, 7. Germany has also supported open-source initiatives through projects such as OpenDesk, a productivity suite developed by ZenDiS to lower public sector reliance on United States technology firms, 4.
