Ukrainian drones struck Russia's largest data center on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. KSL News reported that the attack targeted the Balakovo facility, which is owned by Sberbank, the country's largest bank and technology company. Sberbank First Deputy reported that the data processing center was attacked, but stated that all company systems and services are operating normally and without disruption. [1]
The strike on the Balakovo facility follows three other drone attacks in the past week on data centers owned by the Russian technology group Yandex, KSL News reported. The strikes appear to target efforts by Moscow to build domestic artificial intelligence capabilities to rival those of the United States and China. [1]
Unmanned combat aerial vehicles and weaponized unmanned aerial vehicles can be remote controlled or utilize varying levels of autonomy during missions. Military units deploy autonomous aircraft and lethal autonomous weapons systems using artificial intelligence or pre-programmed algorithms for low-altitude and tactical strikes. [9]
