Artificial intelligence companies are rapidly integrating advertisements into chatbot interfaces to help offset the steep compute costs of generating responses, Wired AI reported. OpenAI has built a customer base of over 100,000 advertisers in ChatGPT since launching ads on its platform in February. Google also expanded advertising placements within its AI Mode search chatbot interface last week. [1]

Anthropic continues to maintain a different strategy by keeping its Claude chatbot free of advertisements. According to Wired AI, Anthropic reaffirmed this pledge in a Super Bowl commercial earlier this year and omitted any mention of advertising revenue models in its recent initial public offering filing. [1]

The contrast in monetization strategies comes as tech firms navigate the high infrastructure expenses associated with serving large language models at scale. Wired AI reported that Anthropic is relying on approximately $112 billion in investor funding to support its ad-free business model while rival platforms build out commercial ad networks. [1]
