Google Expands TPU Inference Ecosystem to Challenge Nvidia Software Dominance
Google is advancing its TPU externalization strategy by partnering with open-source ecosystem maintainers to build a viable alternative to Nvidia CUDA for model inference.

Google is making headway in expanding its Tensor Processing Unit software ecosystem to challenge Nvidia market dominance in artificial intelligence inference. SemiAnalysis reported that Google is collaborating directly with maintainers across the developer ecosystem to build a viable alternative to the Nvidia CUDA software moat. Nvidia leadership and engineers are reportedly reacting by working extended hours in response to the competitive push. [1]
The TPU integration efforts span key upstream projects and software frameworks. According to SemiAnalysis, Google is partnering with the Meta PyTorch team, vLLM maintainers including Inferact and RedHat, SGLang maintainers RadixArk, llm-d, and Ray. These technical partnerships aim to streamline TPU deployment across standard enterprise inference pipelines. [1]
The developments follow Google broader externalization initiative for its hardware platform. SemiAnalysis reported that initial third-party TPUv7 benchmarks published on InferenceX evaluated single-turn workloads. In an apples-to-apples FP8 comparison running Qwen 3.5 397B, the TPU hardware demonstrated competitive performance capabilities. [1]
Software ecosystem integration remains central to hardware demand in target enterprise environments. SemiAnalysis noted that developer ecosystem adoption is as critical as underlying hardware compute capability, given Nvidia historic reliance on its software layer to retain developer lock-in across industry workloads.
