Microsoft Research and UC Berkeley have released TokenEconomizer, an open-source cost controller for coding agents, MarkTechPost reported. The plugin learns from past sessions in a software repository to cut resource waste during subsequent tasks. [1]

According to MarkTechPost, every agent turn usually re-bills the system prompt, every loaded tool schema, and the full session history. TokenEconomizer operates without touching model weights or agent code, making it compatible with several existing platforms. [1]

MarkTechPost reported that the tool works with Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, and Pi. In tests across 277 SWE-Bench tasks, TokenEconomizer lowered mean costs by 18.4 percent to 30.9 percent across five agent-model settings. [1]

An artificial intelligence agent, also known as agentic AI, is an autonomous program that can make decisions, pursue defined goals, and take actions independently, unlike traditional narrow chatbots. [4]
