Shopify announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, that it is expanding its agentic commerce platform to allow more artificial intelligence agents to browse and buy products on behalf of shoppers. As The Verge AI reported, consumers can configure their software agents to make direct purchases across more than one billion product listings in the company catalog. [1]

The available catalog includes merchandise listed both on and off standard Shopify storefronts. According to The Verge AI, the expanded access follows a partnership announced in September between Shopify and Meta that enabled Meta's Muse agent to search and buy items through the network. [1]

Shopify was originally founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, who initially created an online snowboard shop named Snowdevil in Ottawa, Canada. Lütke built a custom platform using Ruby on Rails to replace existing e-commerce systems, which led the founders to commercialize the store-building software. [3]
