Eighty startups raised a total of 8.5 billion dollars during the third quarter of 2026, Semiconductor Engineering reported. Artificial intelligence dominated the funding landscape during the period, driven by large investments in hardware and infrastructure companies. [1]

Two artificial intelligence inference companies each secured 1 billion dollars in funding during the quarter, according to Semiconductor Engineering. Investors focused heavily on startups developing alternatives to costly and capacity-limited high-bandwidth memory, as data center expansion increased demand for memory components. [1]

Semiconductor Engineering reported that startups are developing memory alternatives by building on commodity dynamic random-access memory, holding models in on-chip static random-access memory, or stacking memory directly onto compute chips. Interconnect technologies, networking chips, and photonics were the most active startup investment areas in the quarter to address data movement bottlenecks. [1]

Venture capital is a form of private equity financing provided to early-stage companies with high growth potential in exchange for equity. Investors finance these startups despite high failure rates in hopes that some companies will become successful. [3]
