Reddit announced during its third quarter earnings call on Thursday that it is transitioning to a primarily logged in platform. TechCrunch AI reported that the company is changing its strategy as traffic from traditional web search declines amid the rise of artificial intelligence search tools. [1]

The platform long relied on web search engines to bring in users who added the site name to their search queries. TechCrunch AI reported that the shift to a logged in model aims to block unauthorized artificial intelligence scrapers while enabling Reddit to secure data licensing agreements with AI model developers. [1]

Reddit became a public company on the New York Stock Exchange on March 21, 2024, at a valuation of 6.4 billion dollars. In 2025, the platform generated 2.2 billion dollars in annual revenue, driven mostly by advertising, and reached 121.4 million daily active unique users in the fourth quarter. [3]

TechCrunch AI reported that the strategic shift to require account logins is also intended to help Reddit grow its overall revenue. [1]
