The United Kingdom government has announced 100 million pounds to create a dedicated artificial intelligence biosecurity laboratory, according to WION and The Next Web. Crypto Briefing and WION both report that OpenAI and Anthropic are contributing up to 200 million pounds in model access and computing credits between them. Business Standard reported the commitment as 100 million euros, while Bloomberg and NewsCord confirm the figure is 100 million pounds. [1][4][5][6][8][9]

The facility is designed to use artificial intelligence to detect emerging biological threats earlier, WION reported. WION also noted that the initiative aims to accelerate the development of vaccines and treatments. Google DeepMind is also joining the project alongside OpenAI and Anthropic, according to WION, Crypto Briefing, and Business Standard. [1][5][6]

The American artificial intelligence public benefit corporations OpenAI and Anthropic are both headquartered in San Francisco, California. Former members of OpenAI founded Anthropic in January 2021 to promote artificial intelligence safety. As FTMQ SI reported earlier, Britain's AI Security Institute previously maintained access to unreleased frontier models from the United States for pre-release safety evaluations. [10][12][13]

WION reported that the arrangement raises questions regarding artificial intelligence companies helping to guard against biological dangers that their own technology could potentially worsen. [1]
