United Kingdom launches AI Biosecurity Lab with model pledges

The United Kingdom government announced the launch of the AI Biosecurity Lab on October 24, 2026, backing the project with 100 million pounds in public funding, Tech Times reported. Tech Times and Tokenpost both report that OpenAI and Anthropic have pledged up to 200 million pounds combined in model credits for the facility. According to Tech Times, the facility will operate as an independent non-profit institution focused on early disease detection and biological threat defense. [1][2]

The pledged model credits are not cash and will be drawn down only as the laboratory puts the tools to work, according to Tech Times.
