United Kingdom launches laboratory to evaluate artificial intelligence biological risks
The United Kingdom has launched the AI Biological Security Laboratory to assess biological threats and support safe life sciences research alongside major technology developers.

The United Kingdom is establishing the AI Biological Security Laboratory, known as AIBL, to assess and mitigate safety risks associated with artificial intelligence in life sciences. According to hi-Tech.ua, the new initiative aims to evaluate how technologies that accelerate drug development could also simplify dangerous biological tasks. Tech Times reported that the facility is Britain's first dedicated AI biosecurity laboratory. [1][2]
Major artificial intelligence developers OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind are supporting the initiative, hi-Tech.ua reported. British firm Basecamp Research has also joined the research efforts. The outlet noted that work at AIBL will focus on two key areas, including finding methods to detect potential biological threats. [1]
As FTMQ SI reported earlier, the United Kingdom government committed 100 million pounds, equivalent to 134 million dollars, to fund the project under its National AI Biosecurity Initiative. The facility was established to operate as an independent non-profit organization collaborating with public and academic sectors to analyze biological risks and support vaccine creation. [6]
The launch comes amid broader industry efforts to strengthen biosecurity measures for synthetic biology tools. As FTMQ SI previously reported, Google DeepMind recently introduced SynthID Bio, a watermarking method designed to trace artificial intelligence-generated proteins without altering their biological function.
